Date:
Sunday, June 26, 2016 - 10:00am to 1:00pm
Location:
Edgewood Park
West Rock and Whalley Avenue
New Haven, CT 06515
Description:
One of the only farmers’ markets operating year-round in Connecticut, CitySeed honors a seasonal favorite at Strawberry Fest, the second of CitySeed’s 2016 festival series, at its Weekend Farmers’ Markets at Wooster Square on Saturday, June 25th and Edgewood Park on Sunday, June 26th.

Strawberry Fest at the two markets celebrates all things strawberry in slightly different ways.  Both markets offer fresh, juicy, local strawberries in a variety of luscious forms, including strawberry shortcake by Small Kitchen Big Taste showcasing Hindinger Farm-sourced berries; strawberry basil, strawberry lemonade and strawberry mascarpone balsamic popsicles from PopCentric Gourmet Ice Pops; and strawberry-themed recipes and pairings from our very own farmers and vendors highlighting in-season produce including snap peas, raspberries, cherries, summer squash, cucumbers, and greens such as spinach and kale.  Activities for young and older include live music by Frank Critelli, strawberry-themed face painting and a take-home treat for kids.

At Wooster Square, strawberries also abound at food carts including Crepes Choupette with strawberry Nutella® crepes and Farm Belly Food Truck with strawberry smoothies starring berries from Massaro Community Farm.  Vendors’ special strawberry-centric offerings include WholeG with strawberry pistachio tartelettes; The Soup Girl with strawberry gazpacho featuring berries from Rose's Berry Farm; and Strawberry Milk direct from Smyth's Trinity Farm.  At Edgewood Park, the berry fun continues with The Farmer’s Cow scooping Summer Meadow Strawberry ice cream; and a cooking demo and samples highlighting fresh greens with strawberry-honey dressing.

This year CitySeed is hosting a series of festivals at its weekend markets honoring seasonal favorites, including Apple Fest on October 1st & 2nd and Squash Everything on November 5th & 6th.  Festivals incorporate themed cooking demos or tastings; special food items for sale; food truck menus and farmer pairings and specials; live performances by local musicians; and family-friendly activities.

The Wooster Square Market is located in Russo Park at the corner of Chapel Street and DePalma Court, 9am-1pm.  The Edgewood Park Market is located at the corner of Whalley and West Rock Avenues, 10am-1pm.  The Downtown Market opened on Wednesday, June 15th, 11am-2pm.  The Fair Haven Market opens on Thursday, July 7th, 3-6pm.

All CitySeed Farmers’ Markets offer Double Value Coupon Program, a nutrition incentive program that enables SNAP recipients to double their money dollar for dollar at CitySeed Farmers’ Markets – up to $10 buys $20 of CT-grown fruit, vegetables, seedlings, or canned fruits and vegetables at each market each week.

In addition to supporting local agriculture, health equity is a primary focus of CitySeed’s work.  We enhance access to healthy food through a series of Farmers’ Markets structured for all income levels, a Mobile Farmers’ Market, SNAP Double Value Coupon Program, community-based cooking education programs through Kitchen at CitySeed, policy work and other food-related programs.
