TWO DAY PASTEL WORKSHOP

Join artist Kate Henderson for this 2-day introduction to pastels and beyond. Participants will learn techniques of using soft pastels. Class drawings will be focused on representing a still life; participants are also encouraged to bring a few landscape photos to work from. No experience necessary, but some basic drawing skills are assumed.

DAY 1: Learn the basics of how to use soft pastels, including application techniques, value and color studies, underpainting and toned paper. Participants will also explore different papers, types of pastels, and proper cleaning and care of materials.

DAY 2: Participants will delve deeper into the particular drawing techniques used by Kate herself, from gestural to abstraction with mixed media.

Class Fee: $20. Basic materials, including a set of 24 Sennelier pastels, are included for use during class. Sets can be purchased to take home for an additional $5 to be paid at the end of the class. Open to all, 18+

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Kate Henderson received her MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University and a BFA in painting and a BA in art history at Indiana University. She is recognized for her pastels and is featured in Exhibeo Art Magazine. Her work has been shown at Creative Tech week NY, The Lumen Prize global tour at The Auditorium on Broadway NY, Degas Society in New Orleans, New Haven Lawn Club, NEST in Bridgeport CT, Ridgefield Camera Works, Franklin Street Works in Stamford CT, BRAG at the University of Bridgeport Schelfhaudt Gallery, Bridgeport CT, Connecticut Hospice, Creative Arts in New Haven, Yale-Sterling Library, and Art Place in New Haven.
