Session 1: "Composition, Basic Drawing and Tone". Students will start with a few quick gesture drawings of the model to loosen up and find the final pose, followed by a long charcoal drawing on charcoal rubbed, mid-toned paper. This class will cover gesture in drawing, composition, tone, and lost and found edges.

Session 2: "Monochromatic Painting in Oil". Students will do a quick-drying acrylic mid-tone wash on a canvas or canvas board with ready mixed paint (supplied), followed by a monochromatic painting of the model using just three colors: Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and a white. It is the same approach as the previous session but with oil paint. This class will cover the medium of oil paint, gesture, tone, composition, and lost and found edges.

Session 3: "Eyes, Noses and Mouths". Students will understand the basics of painting eyes, noses and mouths. They will receive tips for the economy of portraying all three, without over stating each feature. This class will continue to explore drawing in oil paint, with the addition of new colors for a limited palette. Session 4: "Color in Portrait painting". Starting with a limited palette, students will focus on color in painting the portrait as a whole. There will be color mixing demos and ideas for an expanded palette. The concept of warm and cool colors will be explored as well as basic color juxtaposition. Once registered, you will receive a supply list. There are some supplies available based on need. Easels and drawing boards are also available to reserve on a first come basis. Classes are held at Kehler Liddell Gallery- 873 Whalley Ave., New Haven CT.
