Five local survivors appear in new Holocaust film, share what ‘the world doesn’t know’

October 31, 2015, The New Haven Register, by Peter Hvizdak- "They are still living among us, these survivors of the Holocaust, and all of them have incredible stories of what they witnessed, what they endured and how they made it out alive. Four of them, all New Haven residents, are highlighted in a new documentary, “People Forget ... New Haven Remembers.” This film, which encapsulates a great deal of history in about a half hour, will have its premiere at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 at New Haven’s Criterion Cinemas. A discussion will follow with the filmmaker, Elena Lefkowitz. (The suggested donation is $5). Later the film will be distributed to high schools and on the Jewish Learning Network. The documentary’s producers, Fay Sheppard and Doris Zelinsky, are officials with Greater New Haven Holocaust Memory Inc., a volunteer non-profit group. Both Sheppard and Zelinsky were children of Holocaust survivors. “The fifth star of the movie is New Haven’s Holocaust Memorial,” Zelinsky said. She noted the funds to erect it were raised by the survivors and others in the community who went door to door seeking contributions. It was the first Holocaust memorial built on public land in the United States..."
