Wearing a white bucket hat and some shades, he’s equipped to handle the sun toasting the sand around him. He’s on a mission—and nothing will distract him from the next chapters of his novel. Artist Larry Morse tells that story in his series Black Men Reading, now on view alongside the work of Jane Gilman Fleischner at the Mitchell Branch Library in Westville.

Lloyd, 46, is the owner of Ma’s House, newly opened at the former Lena’s Cafe spot at 873 Whalley Ave. The Southern breakfast and dinner restaurant has been a long time coming for Lloyd, a New Haven native and mom of five.

August 4, 2022, by Lucy Gellman- "Lou Mangini was on a thin strip of road somewhere in the U.K. Beside him, an officer peppered him with questions. How fast had he been going? Where was he headed? Had he had anything to drink? A few giggles floated through the air, mingling with the scents of hops and summer sweat. As Mangini pressed a finger to his nose, the officer beside him pushed it a step further. “I don’t carry a gun because this is not America,” she declared in a thick, laid-on Cockney accent.
